Your Internal Self

Step 1: Understand your internal, authentic self and what you bring to the world.

“I believe there’s a calling for all of us. I know that every human being has value and purpose. The real work of our lives is to become aware. And awakened. To answer the call.”

“I’ve come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that’s as unique as a fingerprint – and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you.”

~ Oprah Winfrey

Understanding your internal self is all about discovering your true purpose in life and awakening your internal sense of value. This is the foundation of your personal image — your personal brand.

Each one of us brings to the world a unique calling and a singular way of manifesting it. It’s these individual fingerprints that make our world an exceptional place to live.  As a result, everyone has a different personal image and personal brand. Your personal image and personal brand are how you set yourself apart — how you leave a lasting impression and are, ultimately, remembered.

Your value and purpose are not necessarily rooted in the way you earn a living. Rather, it’s your approach to life, and your contributions therein. For example, if you’re always smiling, you bring value to the world by brightening people’s days. If you’re a facilitator — if you find value in serving others behind the scenes — then your purpose is fulfilled by helping others fulfill their destiny. Your intrinsic facilitating skills and generosity of spirit make the world a better place.

So, to stay true to this philosophy, and to act from your authentic self, you need to create your life’s income by doing something that brings you joy — something that speaks to your inner values and fulfills your purpose in life. This is ultimately what becomes your perfect personal image and personal brand.

How do you determine your internal value and purpose in life? That’s the $64,000 question, and the answer is not one-size-fits-all. Every body’s journey is different. You might seek out a Life Coach, or turn to your faith. Perhaps you’re most comfortable reading any and all literature of a self-exploratory nature. Whatever path works best for you, only you can determine. It’s through self-examination and, quite frankly, trial and error that you discover your values and purpose.

Try asking yourself the following questions:

  • What is most important to me?
  • What gives me the most pleasure?
  • What fills my emotional tank?
  • When I get lost in an activity, what am I doing?
  • What are my gifts?
  • What comes naturally to me? What can I do without even thinking about it?

Once you find and manifest your true values and purpose for living, more deeply rooted convictions will come to the fore. And as you start living these deeper values and purposes, your life will become richer and more meaningful. It’s through this purposeful living that your life’s fingerprint will become bigger and more valuable.

But remember, determining your internal value and purpose in life is not a one-time process; it’s a life’s-journey.
