What is Personal Branding?

You may ask, “What is a personal brand and why do I need one?”

Jobsearch.about.com defines personal branding as, “Your total perceived value, relative to competitors, as viewed by your audience.”  They further inform that this perceived value is created through personal appearance, personality, competencies and differentiators.

To be competitive in today’s world you need to think of your services as a product, whether you work for yourself or for someone else.  Unlike in our parent’s day, in today’s job market a person changes jobs between 10 and 15 times throughout the lifespan of their career.  So in a very real way, in order to move forward, you need to become a salesperson of yourself — adept at selling your services and creating ways to differentiate yourself from your competition.

This is not a new idea.  Napoleon Hill talked about it in his book Think and Grow Rich.  In Chapter 6, Organized Planning, Planning the Sale of Services, he states, “It should be encouraging to know that practically all the great fortunes began in the form of compensation for personal services, or from the sale of IDEAS.”

In today’s competitive world, to be seen you need to set your services and/or ideas apart from the competition.  You do this by mindfully creating a brand (through appearance, personality and energy) which reflects who you are, from the core.

I am not talking about creating a false facade.  Your brand should reflect who you are and what your abilities are.  Your goal is show the people in your particular world who you are and what you represent without saying a word.  By doing this, they will be more open to what you have to say.

You already have a personal brand.  The $64,000 question is, is it one that reflects your internal self, your external self and the world in which you move?
